PROPOSED ITINERARY

Awakening & the First Teaching Bodh Gaya & Sarnath

4 nights · 5 daysBodh Gaya, then Varanasi and Sarnath

The Buddha woke to enlightenment beneath the Bodhi Tree at Bodh Gaya, then travelled to the deer park at Sarnath, just outside Varanasi, to give his first teaching. This five-day journey follows the same order. It begins with evening meditation at the Mahabodhi Temple and a full day among the sacred sites and monasteries of Bodh Gaya, then crosses to Varanasi for the Ganga aarti, Sarnath with a specialist guide, Kashi Vishwanath and the ghats, and a last boat on the river at first light.

WHERE YOU STAY
  1. 2NBodh Gaya
  2. 2NVaranasi
AT A GLANCE

Who it suits, and how it moves.

Buddhist pilgrims, students of early Buddhist history and travellers of any faith who want the place of the awakening and the place of the first teaching, with time to sit as well as see.

Proposed duration
4 nights · 5 days. 4N/5D, arriving at Gaya and leaving from Varanasi. It runs in reverse if your flights or trains suit, and a third night at Bodh Gaya can be added for more time at the temple.
Travel style
Private journey at a steady pace: two bases, one road day, meditation at the Mahabodhi Temple, a specialist guide at Sarnath and the Ganga at first light on the last morning.
Arrive
Gaya Airport, a short drive from Bodh Gaya, or Gaya Junction railway station, about 16 km away. Patna airport, roughly three to four hours by road, has more flights.
Depart
Varanasi: Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport at Babatpur, about 25 km from the city, or Varanasi Junction (Varanasi Cantt) railway station.

Gaya Airport has few scheduled flights and some of its international services are seasonal, so Day 1 is planned around your actual ticket; an arrival after dark moves the evening meditation to Day 2. The last morning's boat is timed to your departure, and winter fog in December and January can delay flights, trains and early road starts.

DAY BY DAY

A proposed programme with its travel and rest built in. We adjust the order to your arrival, the season and your pace.

Evening meditation at the Mahabodhi Temple

Your first visit, at dusk, when lamps are lit around the temple and monks and pilgrims gather for the evening chanting. You sit for a period of meditation near the Bodhi Tree: with the gathering in Standard, and as a private session with your meditation guide in Premium and Luxury. Phones are left at the deposit counter near the entrance.

Monks in red and orange robes reading outdoors, Bodh Gaya
  1. From 5 amVisit
The Mahabodhi Temple and the Bodhi Tree

The temple opens at 5 am, and the first hours are the calmest, with a short chanting and meditation session at 5.30. Walk the paths around the temple, sit near the Vajrasana and the Bodhi Tree, a descendant of the tree under which Siddhartha woke, and see the shrines that mark the weeks after the awakening, such as the Animesh Lochan Chaitya and the jewelled walk. Premium and Luxury include a private guide; in Standard you visit with your coordinator's notes.

  2. Late morningRest
    Breakfast and rest

Back to the hotel. The middle of the day is kept free.

  3. AfternoonVisit

The 80-foot Great Buddha Statue, then a short drive between the monasteries built by Buddhist communities from Thailand, Bhutan, Japan, Tibet and elsewhere, each in its own style. Both are arranged only where a monastery agrees.

  4. EveningFree time
The temple again, or a quiet evening

Many guests return for the evening chanting; others stay in. Nothing else is planned.

  1. Early morningFree time
A last hour at the temple, or the Sujata Stupa

  2. After breakfastOn the road
Bodh Gaya to Varanasi by road or train

About 250 km on the Grand Trunk Road into Uttar Pradesh, generally six to seven hours with a proper lunch stop and short breaks. Where timings suit, a train from Gaya Junction can replace the drive; your coordinator advises on this when you enquire.

  3. AfternoonArrival

Time to rest after the journey before the evening.

  4. EveningExperience
    The Ganga aarti

The evening aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat: priests with great brass lamps, conch shells and bells, in front of crowds on the steps and boats on the water. In Standard you watch from the ghat, in Premium from an arranged viewing place where one is available, and in Luxury from a private boat. It is a Hindu ritual, watched as a guest.

  1. MorningOn the road
    Drive to Sarnath

Sarnath lies about 10 km north-east of central Varanasi, usually 30 to 45 minutes by road.

  2. MorningVisit
    Sarnath with a specialist guide

In the deer park at Isipatana the Buddha gave his first teaching to the five companions who had left him. With your guide you stop at the Chaukhandi Stupa, where tradition says he met them again, then walk the Dhamek Stupa, the Dharmarajika remains and the excavated monasteries, and see the Mulagandhakuti Vihara, its walls painted with the life of the Buddha by the Japanese artist Kosetsu Nosu. In the Sarnath Museum you see the Lion Capital of Ashoka, the national emblem of India. The museum is closed on Fridays, so this day is planned to avoid one.

  3. MiddayRest
    Lunch and a rest

Back to Varanasi for lunch and an hour at the hotel.

  4. AfternoonVisit
    Kashi Vishwanath and the ghats

A planned visit to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple through the temple corridor; phones and bags are deposited before security, and the crowd decides the wait. Then a walk along the ghats from Dashashwamedh, with a guide in Premium and Luxury. Kashi Vishwanath is a Hindu temple, visited as a guest, and can be left out if you prefer.

Day 5DepartureDeparture day

    A boat along the ghats

The ghats as the city wakes: bathers, bells and the first boats out. Standard has a shared scheduled ride, Premium a private rowing boat and Luxury a privately guided sunrise programme. Boats run only when river levels and local administration allow.

  2. After breakfast, or as your ticket requiresDeparture
Transfer to Varanasi airport or station

The airport at Babatpur is about 25 km from the city, often an hour or more in traffic, so the transfer is timed with a margin.

Overnight · Departure

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Walking, early starts and the season.

Walking and steps

Sarnath means about two hours on foot, on mostly level paths and lawns. At the Mahabodhi, shoes come off at the entrance, there are steps down into the temple compound, and the circuit is on stone paving that is cold at dawn in winter and hot by midday in summer; socks help. The ghats and the lanes around Kashi Vishwanath involve steps and crowds.

Early starts

Two optional early starts: the temple at 5 am on Day 2 and the boat around sunrise on Day 5. The road day begins after breakfast.

Boats and boarding

Reaching the boat means a few uneven ghat steps and a step down into it, with the boatman's help. Boats run only when river levels and local administration allow; during monsoon high water they can be suspended, and the session is then replaced or removed in your quotation.

Mobility

The road day is long, with breaks every two hours or so. Sarnath's paths are mostly level; the Mahabodhi compound involves steps and walking barefoot, and Kashi Vishwanath involves queues and security checks. Tell us about wheelchairs or walking aids when you enquire: we assess each site before quoting rather than promise full access.

Season

October to March is the most comfortable time. December and January are the busiest months at Bodh Gaya, with pilgrims from across Asia, and dense fog can delay flights, trains and early road starts. April to June is very hot; July to September brings monsoon rain.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

Can we start in Varanasi and end at Bodh Gaya?

Yes. The journey works in either direction, and we suggest the order once we know your flights or trains. Gaya has few scheduled flights, so some guests arrive by train at Gaya Junction or fly into Patna, and others start in Varanasi and travel the route in reverse.

Are phones and cameras allowed at the Mahabodhi Temple?

Phones are not allowed inside the temple complex and are left at the deposit counter near the entrance. A camera needs a camera ticket from the temple counter. Rules can change, so your coordinator or guide confirms them on the day; photography during prayers is best avoided.

Is Gaya the same place as Bodh Gaya?

No. Gaya is a separate city about 15 km away, a Hindu pilgrimage centre known for ancestral rites at the Vishnupad Temple. This journey uses Gaya only as a gateway. Rites in Gaya can be added on request and quoted separately, and A Journey of Remembrance is planned around them.

Do we need to be Buddhist to make this journey?

No. The Mahabodhi Temple and Sarnath welcome visitors of every faith who come quietly and dress modestly. Many guests come for the history as much as for devotion. Kashi Vishwanath on Day 4 is a Hindu temple, visited as a guest, and can be left out.

Availability and cancellation. Hotels, vehicles, boats, guides and temple arrangements are confirmed when we prepare your quotation, and they depend on dates, weather, river levels and the rules of each site. Cancellation terms follow the suppliers in your journey and are set out in the quotation. Booking terms

This is a request for a personalised quotation, not a booking. No payment is required to send your preferences.
