The river is the right place to begin Varanasi. In the half-light before sunrise, the boat pulls away from the ghat and the city appears one landing at a time: bathers stepping into the water, priests setting out their platforms, the first bells and the smoke of the cremation grounds. As the sun clears the far bank, the stone of the ghats turns from grey to gold.

Your guide travels on the boat and explains what you are passing without filling every silence. The boat type, rowing or motor, its capacity, the boarding ghat and the start time are all set out in your quotation, as is whether the boat is private to your party or a shared variant. The route usually covers a stretch between the southern ghats and Dashashwamedh, holding back from Manikarnika, where cameras are put away.

Boating depends on the river. When the Ganga rises in the monsoon, roughly July to September, the administration can suspend all boating, sometimes for weeks, and fog can delay winter departures. If the boat cannot run, we tell you as early as we can and offer the alternatives available.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Step by step.

  1. Meet your guide before sunrise at the stated boarding ghat.
  2. Board the specified boat, private or shared as quoted.
  3. Sunrise over the far bank as the ghats come to life.
  4. The riverfront's landmarks and rituals explained along the way.
  5. Return to the boarding ghat or a nearby landing.
GOOD TO KNOW

Before you go.

  • Walking: steep, uneven ghat steps lead down to the boat, and boarding means stepping across from the bank. Tell us about mobility needs.
  • Timing: about one and a half to two hours, starting before sunrise, so the time changes with the season.
  • Dress: layers and a shawl from November to February, when the river is cold. Life jackets are to be worn on board.
  • Access: boats may be suspended at high water or in dense fog. Photography is not appropriate at the cremation ghats.

Added items are requests. If something is already part of your journey and tier it shows as included and is never charged twice.
