Music and the river have long kept company in Banaras. On this private boat, a musician performs for your party alone as you move slowly along the ghats, perhaps a flute or sitar at dawn, or a vocalist with tabla as the evening lamps are lit. The water carries the sound, and the city goes on with its business on the steps.
The programme is built around a named performer. The musician, the instrument or style, the duration and the boat are agreed and written into your quotation, and the experience goes ahead subject to that performer being confirmed. Between pieces the musician may introduce the raga and explain how it suits the hour, so first-time listeners can follow along.
Sur on the Ganges replaces the boat session it is mapped to in your journey, so you are never billed for two boats in the same slot, and any additional performer cost is reviewed and shown in your quotation. As with every river programme, boating depends on the water level and any local orders in force.

- Return to the boarding ghat or a nearby landing.
GOOD TO KNOW
Before you go.
- Walking: steep ghat steps lead to the boat, and boarding means stepping across from the bank.
- Timing: usually about an hour and a half at dawn or dusk. The exact duration is set with the performer.
- Dress: layers for cool mornings and evenings on the water. Life jackets are to be worn on board.
- Access: subject to a confirmed performer and to boating being permitted on the day. Filming the musician needs their agreement.
