Beyond its famous temples, Varanasi holds a great many smaller, older shrines: a lingam set into a courtyard wall, a goddess temple at the turn of a lane, a sanctuary named in the Kashi Khanda that most visitors walk straight past. Many are still tended daily by priests and neighbourhood families, and each has its own story, festival and place in the city's sacred geography.

This experience is a trail designed by a knowledgeable guide through a selection of these lesser-visited temples. The exact stops are confirmed with you before the day, along with the start and end points, a route map, the duration, the walking involved and the transport options, whether entirely on foot or with short drives between neighbourhoods. At each shrine the guide explains its deity, its history and how local worshippers use it.

Less visited does not mean empty or exclusive. These are living places of worship, open to their communities, and you may share them with worshippers, a festival crowd or a priest at the daily rites. Each shrine sets its own rules on entry, dress and photography, which the guide explains, and some close at set times of day. This trail is separate from the Kashi Temple Circuit, which covers the city's better-known temples.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Step by step.

  1. Confirm your trail, stops and start point in advance.
  2. Meet your guide at the agreed starting point.
  3. A sequence of older, lesser-visited shrines, each explained in context.
  4. Short drives between neighbourhoods, if part of your route.
  5. Finish at the agreed end point, with the route map to keep.
GOOD TO KNOW

Before you go.

  • Walking: from two hours to a full day depending on the trail, through narrow lanes with steps and uneven paving.
  • Timing: shrines open and close at different hours, so the trail is timed around them. Festival days change access.
  • Dress: shoulders and knees covered. Shoes come off at most shrines.
  • Access: the lanes are not wheelchair accessible. Entry and photography follow each shrine's rules, and quiet access cannot be promised.

Added items are requests. If something is already part of your journey and tier it shows as included and is never charged twice.
