Kashi has temples on almost every street, and trying to see too many in one day leaves little but queues and traffic. This circuit is planned the other way round: a short list of temples agreed with you in advance, with a realistic allowance for travel, crowds, darshan and rest.

The list depends on your interests, time and mobility, and might draw on temples such as Kashi Vishwanath; Kaal Bhairav, revered as the guardian of the city; the Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple, linked by tradition to Tulsidas; the Durga temple at Durga Kund; and the Shri Vishwanath Mandir on the Banaras Hindu University campus. Three or four temples make a comfortable half day, and a full day allows a few more, with a break.

Darshan follows each temple's own rules, queues and timings, and cannot be promised at a set hour. Kashi Vishwanath, in particular, has strict security and does not allow phones inside, and any separately booked darshan follows the temple trust's official process. This circuit is distinct from Varanasi Beyond the Familiar, which explores quieter, lesser-visited shrines.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Step by step.

  1. Agree your temple list in advance, based on time and interests.
  2. Pick-up from your hotel with your guide or host.
  3. Visits to each temple, with its traditions and customs explained.
  4. Planned breaks for rest and refreshment.
  5. Return to your hotel.
GOOD TO KNOW

Before you go.

  • Walking: varies by temple. Expect queues, steps, lanes and standing time, with drives between temples.
  • Timing: a half day for three or four temples, or a full day for more. Mondays and festival days are much busier.
  • Dress: shoulders and knees covered. Shoes are removed at every temple, so slip-ons help.
  • Access: phones are not allowed in several temples, including Kashi Vishwanath. Entry, timings and darshan follow each temple's rules.

Added items are requests. If something is already part of your journey and tier it shows as included and is never charged twice.
