In Banaras, paan is less a snack than a gesture of hospitality, offered after meals, at weddings and to guests. Banarasi paan received a geographical indication tag in 2023, and a good paan maker treats the craft with care: choosing and keeping the leaves, mixing the pastes and folding each one to order.

This session sits you with a paan maker who explains and demonstrates the preparation. You see the betel leaf trimmed and spread with chuna, slaked lime, and katha, catechu paste, then layered with sweet fillings such as gulkand, a rose-petal preserve, fennel, cardamom and coconut. The conversation covers the leaf, the etiquette of offering paan and its place in the city's music, poetry and celebrations.

Every paan in this experience is made without tobacco, and the full list of ingredients is shown to you before anything is prepared. Areca nut, supari, is a traditional part of paan but can be left out on request, and you are welcome to watch and talk without tasting at all.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Step by step.

  1. Meet your host at an agreed paan counter.
  2. A demonstration of how Banarasi paan is prepared.
  3. Every ingredient named and shown before preparation.
  4. One or two tobacco-free paan to taste, if you wish.
  5. Conversation about paan in Banaras life.
GOOD TO KNOW

Before you go.

  • Walking: minimal; the session takes place at or near one counter, often in a busy lane.
  • Timing: about forty-five minutes to an hour, often after lunch or in the evening.
  • Diet: paan contains lime and catechu. Tell us about pregnancy, allergies or advice to avoid areca nut, and it will be left out.
  • Access: counters are small and seating is limited. Photography is welcome if the paan maker agrees.

Added items are requests. If something is already part of your journey and tier it shows as included and is never charged twice.
