Varanasi is a city of makers, known not only for its silk but for lacquered wooden toys turned on lathes, the pink enamel work called gulabi meenakari, glass beads, clay and more. Watching a craft is one thing. Trying it yourself, even for an hour or two, gives you a real sense of the skill involved.

This session is built around a confirmed artisan and craft, which might mean painting a lacquered wooden toy, shaping clay with a potter or trying a simple technique under a maker's guidance. The artisan supplies the materials and tools and shows you each step, adjusting for beginners and children. Where the craft allows, you take home what you made.

The craft on offer depends on which artisans are available and willing to host, and it is named in your quotation together with the host, the materials included and the session length. Families with children are welcome, and the session can be arranged per person or for a private group.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Step by step.

  1. Meet your host and the artisan at the workshop.
  2. An introduction to the craft and its tools.
  3. Hands-on time making your own piece with guidance.
  4. Conversation with the maker about their work and training.
  5. Take your piece home, where the craft allows.
GOOD TO KNOW

Before you go.

  • Timing: about one and a half to three hours, depending on the craft.
  • Dress: clothes you do not mind marking with paint, lac or clay.
  • Access: workshops are working spaces with simple seating. Tell us about children's ages and any mobility needs.

Added items are requests. If something is already part of your journey and tier it shows as included and is never charged twice.
