Varanasi is photographed endlessly, and easily photographed badly. This session pairs you with a working photographer who knows where the light falls at each hour, how to read a scene on the ghats and, above all, how to photograph people with respect.

The route is planned around your interests and the hour, either on foot through the ghats and lanes or from a boat on the river. Your photographer helps with composition, exposure and timing, whether you use a phone or a professional camera, and talks you through asking permission, working with consent and when to put the camera away, as at the cremation ghats. Whether a boat or any equipment is included is stated in your quotation.

This is a guided photography experience, and the photographer is there to help you make your own pictures. If you would also like a photographer to take pictures of you, that is a separate service, and adding it here is reviewed so the same coverage is not booked twice.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Step by step.

  1. Meet your photographer at the agreed starting point.
  2. A short conversation about your camera, interests and goals.
  3. A route on foot or by boat, timed for good light.
  4. Hands-on guidance on composition, light and respectful portraits.
  5. A brief review of your images at the end.
GOOD TO KNOW

Before you go.

  • Walking: about two to three hours, with ghat steps and lanes if on foot, or boarding a boat if on the river.
  • Timing: early morning and late afternoon give the softest light. Times are set with your photographer.
  • Dress: comfortable clothes and shoes that grip. Keep gear light and carry a cloth for dust.
  • Access: photography is not appropriate at the cremation ghats or inside many temples. Drones are not part of this experience.

Added items are requests. If something is already part of your journey and tier it shows as included and is never charged twice.
