A Banarasi saree is often the most treasured garment in a family, brought out for weddings and festivals and handed down. This session explains what makes these textiles distinctive, the silks, brocades and weaving techniques, and then shows how they are worn.

A textile specialist lays out examples of Banarasi weaves and explains how to read them: the weight of katan silk, the sheen of zari, the difference between a heavy brocade and a lighter weave, and how motifs such as butis and jaal are built into the cloth. Then the draping demonstration begins, showing the familiar nivi style and other ways a saree can be worn, and you are welcome to try a drape yourself with help.

This is a demonstration, not a sale. Purchases and rentals are separate unless they are specified in your quotation, and if you would like to buy, the specialist can advise on what to look for. The session can be held at your hotel or another agreed venue.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Step by step.

  1. Meet the textile specialist at your hotel or the agreed venue.
  2. Banarasi weaves explained, from katan silk to brocade.
  3. A demonstration of several draping styles.
  4. The chance to try a drape yourself, with help.
  5. Advice on buying, only if you ask.
GOOD TO KNOW

Before you go.

  • Walking: none, as the session is held indoors at one venue.
  • Timing: about ninety minutes. Allow longer if several people would like to try a drape.
  • Dress: a fitted blouse and petticoat make trying a saree easier, and the specialist can advise in advance.
  • Access: seated and indoors, so suitable for most guests. Purchases and rentals are separate unless specified.

Added items are requests. If something is already part of your journey and tier it shows as included and is never charged twice.
