Varanasi has given Indian classical music many of its great voices and players, and in 2015 UNESCO named it a Creative City of Music. The Banaras gharana is known for its tabla and for the thumri, dadra and seasonal songs of its singers, and the tradition still passes from teacher to student in homes across the city.
This evening is a hosted session for your party, with a vocalist or instrumentalist, usually accompanied on tabla, in an intimate venue such as a music room or your hotel. Between pieces the musicians introduce the raga, the rhythm cycle and the way the accompanist answers the soloist, so a first-time listener can follow the conversation.
The experience is subject to a confirmed performer and venue, both named in your quotation along with the duration. Musicians keep their own concert calendars, so it helps to tell us early. Tea or a light dinner can be arranged around the music on request.

Before you go.
- Walking: little, though some venues in the old city are reached through lanes or up steep steps.
- Timing: about one and a half hours, longer with dinner. Dates depend on the performer's availability.
- Dress: smart casual. Seating may be on the floor in the traditional way, with chairs on request.
- Access: subject to a confirmed performer and venue. Please ask before filming, and keep phones on silent.
